The PAG Modernists — India’s Most Valuable Art Category
The Progressive Artists’ Group (PAG) represents the most commercially significant category in the Indian modern art market. For a Government Approved Art Appraiser, accurate appraisal of PAG works requires more than an artist's name: it requires understanding the artist's period, medium, provenance, quality, market tier, auction history and the specific characteristics that distinguish an exceptional work from a lesser example.
A2Z Valuers, led by Nitesh Shrivastava, approaches significant PAG appraisals through the combined disciplines of art-market knowledge, provenance research, authentication assessment and Government Approved Valuer expertise.
M.F. Husain
M.F. Husain (1915–2011) is the most commercially significant Indian artist of the 20th century. His price record spans from the early Saffronart sales through the ₹119 crore Christie’s 19 March 2025 benchmark.
Husain’s market has the widest quality and price range of any PAG artist: from small works on paper, including drawings and studies, at several lakh to major figurative paintings at tens of crore.
The forgery problem in Husain’s market is the most significant of any Indian artist. For significant attributions, provenance research and technical examination are mandatory considerations.
F.N. Souza
Francis Newton Souza (1924–2002) is the most internationally critically significant PAG artist. His figurative painting and the specific quality of his line have attracted sustained critical attention.
Souza’s major figurative compositions — including heads, crucifixions and landscapes — command the highest prices in the Souza market. His drawings and works on paper form a significant secondary market.
The forgery problem is documented, making catalogue raisonné cross-reference a standard component of significant Souza appraisal.
S.H. Raza
Syed Haider Raza (1922–2016) is the most internationally connected PAG artist. His Paris period from 1950 and his transition to the Bindu abstraction for which he is most celebrated make his career one of the most extensively documented in Indian modern art.
Raza’s major Bindu-period canvases, particularly the large Saurashtra, Rajasthan and Panchatattva compositions, are the most commercially significant works.
Accurate Raza appraisal therefore requires careful consideration of period, scale, provenance, composition and market comparables.
V.S. Gaitonde
Vasudeo Santu Gaitonde (1924–2001) represents the most rarefied market within the PAG. His output was small, his abstractions are completely non-objective, with no recognisable imagery, and his collector constituency is concentrated among the most sophisticated Indian and international collectors.
Gaitonde’s auction prices per square centimetre are among the highest of any Indian artist. The limited supply and concentrated collector demand make Gaitonde appraisals particularly sensitive to specific provenance and period.
Tyeb Mehta
Tyeb Mehta (1925–2009) is known for powerful figurative works that have established significant auction records at Sotheby’s and Christie’s.
Tyeb Mehta’s market is relatively concentrated in his major compositional canvases. Smaller works and drawings form a secondary tier.
The distinction between major composition and secondary works is essential when selecting appropriate auction comparables and establishing market value.
